“I write about Sustainability!” I told a friend when she asked me what exactly my specialization was as a Copywriter.
“Oh, I see. That’s nice!” her not so confident response made me rethink my choice of a niche.
Now the thing is that there is nothing wrong with “Sustainability” as a niche. But the problem is that it is such a vast area; individuals are talking about it, small businesses are talking about it, big companies are talking about it and even countries are talking about it. Everywhere you look, the word wiggles its way into conversations, marketing strategies, business policies and global politics. But what is Sustainability exactly? Can I just casually slip it into my content to piggyback on the SEO rankings because the word is being used so mindlessly these days?
WELL NO!
ABSOLUTELY NOT...
Because in one word, sustainability is pure mindfulness.
It is when individuals, business owners and world leaders become mindful of what they consume, how much they need, where do their supplies come from and where do they send their waste. It is about minimising your carbon footprint so that you leave lesser things behind for this planet to process and decompose. Sustainability is a global movement towards a more conscious planet.
A constant effort where people of the world become more aware as to what are the best practices to minimise damage to our natural resources and the steps that can be taken to replenish the poor health of our planet: soil, water, air, wildlife EVERYTHING!
How do I align with the concept of Sustainability in my body, heart and soul?
As discussed above, that what is sustainable is mindful, long term, self-sufficient and good for the environment; be it a product, a habit, a diet, an exercise, or a lifestyle. I chose this niche because in my twenties I became more health oriented and became mindful of what I consumed and my overall wellness:
As a natural consequence, I began to care for the environment as an extension to myself.
At first, it began with small steps like recycling plastics and not littering.
Then I began purchasing zero waste products made from bamboo and other natural materials.
I come from India where there is an abundance of natural fabrics and textiles, and I am a big admirer of these crafts. So I try to buy local and promote small businesses whenever I have the opportunity.
Ancient food wisdom prompts us to consume seasonal and local foods and there are so many brilliant nutritionists out there. I am a vegetarian and try to promote this lifestyle not just in my food choices but also in reusable and eco-friendly cooking utensils in my daily practice.
Yoga helps us become more present to our connection with the cosmos and is definitely the most sustainable lifestyle change one could adopt, given that it has sustained for thousands of years! I practice Yoga not as an exercise or activity but as a WAY OF LIFE :)
Minimalism: I have been trying to be a minimalist for almost 5-6 years now and this has been the most difficult part of my personal sustainability journey so far :( It's an unbelievably SLOW process that demands time and constant introspection. YEARS of conditioning in consumerism sprinkled with socially celebrated hoarding are shackles that are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to break. But I am slowly getting there...
World languages, cultures and Linguistics: this might appear like a strange angle to sustainability but hear me out: local languages, dialects and traditional cultures and actually very similar to local businesses- they carry ancient wisdom and secrets unique to their small ecosystems. As an unfortunate consequence of Globalisation and Post-Colonial hangover, thousands of traditional languages succumb to a handful of 'languages of power' each year all over the world pregnant with all of the valuable ancestral knowledge :( It is my most cherished personal endeavour as a researcher of languages to document, digitise and patronise local languages to promote a sustainable environment for languages of the world! (More on all these topics in my following blogs)
So when I say that SUSTAINABILITY is my Niche, I mean that SUSTAINABILITY is my living, throbbing LIFE!
